Finance does NOT need more software: the case for AI in F&A

Finance teams do NOT need more software. They need AI that acts like a teammate.

For CFOs, the brief hasn’t changed – but the pressure has intensified.

Close faster. Cut costs. Improve insight. Minimize risk. All while managing leaner teams, fragmented systems, and rising compliance expectations.

Enter AI. The supposed miracle worker.

But for most finance leaders, the results aren’t matching the headlines. According to Boston Consulting Group, only 4% of companies report achieving significant financial benefits from their AI investments. Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella admitted recently, “AI is not yet delivering real value at enterprise scale” – a sobering statement from one of its biggest backers.

So, what’s going wrong?

Let’s start with the simplest truth: Finance doesn’t need more software.

It needs something – or someone – who can do real work.

The Software Trap

Most finance organizations already run on a cocktail of ERP systems, forecasting tools, BI dashboards, and automation platforms. And while these tools have helped digitize core processes, they haven’t solved the real constraint: executional capacity.

Month-end still relies on spreadsheets. Reconciliations pile up. Forecasts get delayed because analysts are buried in data prep.

And layering on yet another tool – no matter how intelligent – won’t change that.

As Ian Barkin, co-founder of magentIQ, put it in a recent AMA: “Software is great. But software that still needs a person to babysit it isn’t relieving the pressure. It’s reshuffling the pain.”
(Watch the full AMA here).

What finance teams need isn’t just AI.
They need AI that acts like a teammate.

The Case for a Workforce Extension

Imagine a junior finance analyst. They know your close process. They understand basic controls. They can scan transactions, flag anomalies, and prep variance commentary. They don’t get tired. They don’t take PTO. And they’re available 24/7.

That’s what forward-thinking finance leaders are now building – not just automation, but a multi-agent workforce that blends human expertise with intelligent agents trained to do work that matters.

This isn’t a hypothetical future. MagentIQ Finance & Accounting customers are already moving in this direction – deploying agents that assist with reconciliation, document prep, data transaction as part of tax provisioning and financial reporting.

What Went Wrong With AI in Finance

So why have most CFOs been disappointed by AI rollouts so far?

It comes down to three critical gaps:

  1. AI That Doesn’t Understand Accounting – Most AI platforms weren’t designed for F&A nuance. They can write you a poem about cash flow, but they can’t apply materiality thresholds, validate journal entries, or trace a number across systems. As MIT Technology Review highlighted, the term “AI agent” is being overused – from chatbots to actual goal-seeking systems – and most fall far short of the autonomy and intelligence they promised.
  2. Tools That Need Full-Time Supervision – Automation is supposed to reduce workload. But most finance bots still require human oversight, manual triggers, and constant rework. As David Brain, co-founder of magentIQ, noted: “Too many AI deployments in finance are set up like science experiments – isolated pilots, no accountability, and no business continuity. That’s not transformation. That’s time theft.”
  3. Lack of Orchestration – Without clear orchestration between humans and machines, tasks fall through the cracks. The result? Half-baked processes and frustrated teams doing triage by spreadsheet.

Building a real finance execution model

To fix this, CFOs don’t need more software licenses.

They need capacity they can manage.

This means building an execution layer where:

  • AI agents handle repeatable, rules-based tasks (recs, journal prep, data aggregation)
  • Finance professionals focus on exceptions, insights, and review
  • Every agent – human or AI – is orchestrated to the right task, at the right time

And most critically, it means treating these agents like part of the team, not just code.

As Harvard Business Review recently argued, “The success of AI doesn’t come from replacing people. It comes from reimagining how people and machines work together.” That’s not an abstract principle – that’s a blueprint for finance transformation.

A Final Thought

Every accountant deserves a team – not a queue of software tools.

They deserve systems that understand accounting, learn their workflow, and take real action.

AI won’t fix finance alone. But the right team will – especially when that team includes intelligent, accountable agents that get the job done, AI + People: a multi-agent workforce.
